Announcing the 2006 Ceilidh & Kirkin'O'th'Tartan!
Ceilidh:  October 27 - 28
Kirkin': October 29 - Reformation Sunday
Ceilidh (KAY-lee): 1. an informal social gathering at which there is Scottish or Irish folk music and singing and folk dancing and story telling 2. an annual event at First Presbyterian Church in Salt Lake City in which we invite the community to join is in celebration of the church's Scottish heritage, enjoy various activities at the church for all ages, and eat lots of shortbread!

Kirkin' (sounds just like it's spelled): The word "Kirkin" comes from the Scottish word for "church" ("kirk").  The Kirkin' O' Th' Tartan workship service traditionally traces its roots to the legend that Scots secretly would take swatches of their tartans to church in the 18th century when the wearing of tartans was outlawed under the Proscription Act of 1746.  At a predesignated time in the service, the Clansmen and Clanswomen would touch their concealed tartans while the minister blessed the cloth in Scottish Gaelic.  Legend turned into reality when Presbyterian Minister Dr. Peter Marshall presided over the first formal Kirkin' O' Th' Tartans ceremony on April 27th, 1941, in Washington, D.C.  Today, hundreds of Presbyterian churches celebrate the blessing of the clans.  First Presbyterian traditionally holds the Kirkin' on Reformation Sunday (the last Sunday in October) and representatives from Scottish clans around the state and beyond proudly display their tartans and bring them forward in the Kirkin' service for a blessing.

The FPC Chancel Choir, the Salt Lake Scots bagpipe band, and the presence of clan representatives all enrich the celebration of Reformation Sunday, when we remember the message of grace that is accessible to all through Jesus Christ and His redeeming work on the cross.
